BB4I: Beyond Binary Bias

BB4I: Beyond Binary Bias (90 mins Or 1 hour/week x 3 weeks)

The BB4I workshops are all about going ‘Beyond Barriers 4 Inclusion’.

Everyone has bias. It is part of our internal survival mechanisms, shaped in early childhood development and evolves throughout our lives. Through this workshop, we explore how ‘binary biases’ have contributed to systemic barriers to equitable workplace cultures and systems of oppression for trans and non-binary people; what bias is harmful; how it creates barriers for individuals and those they interact with, and why.

Topics covered will include: 

  •  Going beyond binary and the intersections of identity.
  • Subconscious bias, Privilege, Microaggressions and impacts on workplace cultures.
  • Tools to examine internal biases and check harmful behaviors to inspire equitable opportunities for all to thrive

Key Course Outcomes: 

  • Identify the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation, including variations in gender expression; and be able to apply knowledge and language competencies within their professional roles.

  •  Recognize the role of subconscious bias and impacts of language in perpetuating stigma and barriers for marginalized communities.

  •  Apply thought-leadership skills to practice inclusive verbal and non-verbal tools with an enhanced understanding of intersections of identities.

  •  Develop language confidence and demonstrate inclusive communications best-practices in countering cisnormative and heteronormative workplace practices.

  •  Use strategies to navigate challenging situations with increased confidence and competency.

  •  Critical knowledge of why beyond binary ethics skills are essential for service providers and professionals in every industry; with actionable tools and goal setting.

This workshop is a foundation to learning inclusive language strategies to empower you in being an intentional ally. BB4I: Perfecting Pronouns

Beyond Binary thinking, communication, and inclusive language skills. How we communicate and the language we use IS impactful. It has consequences. These consequences can impact our career path; our ability to perform our professional roles; and they can impact our personal lives and family and friends. 

 Topics covered will include: 

  • 'Gender Variance in History 
  •  Gender Neutral Pronouns: Why now? 
  •  Impacts of inclusive language 
  •  How to build comfort and competency around shifting to a new way of communicating 
  •  Best practices to graciously move forward when you make a mistake 
  •  Confidence-building Practice tips and tools 

Key Course Outcomes:

  • Actively implement new knowledge to positively and professionally interact with others and have the awareness to confidently expand their language and inspire others.
  • Explain why they/them pronouns matter for organizational and individual performance in the workplace.
